Oh definately not saying the whole welcome new members thing is bad. But it's fairly well known that folks use it to boost post count to just get above that 300 mark.

In many ways, the 300 post count limit contributes to some of the spam we get in here. Ironic that it's supposedly there to help reduce spam. However, I think we'll still get that kind of spam because most spammers looking for a forum signature link won't take the time to read the forum rules so they won't even know about the no-follow. But on top of that there are folks that post a lot of "me too" junk to raise post count so we get both types unfortunately.
