Default Re: Joomla

<thread jack>Sorry about the thread jack but I have a client site that was done horribly in Joomla. The new site is being put together on a development server and I need to stop the bleeding on the old site until the new is ready if it's possible.

1. How would one add the nofollow attribute to ALL of the internal links with the exception of the home page.
2. How does one change the url designation for the home page?

Sorry for the stupid questions and the thread jack. I just thought someone here might have a quick answer. I have never used it before and have no intentions of using down the road so I don't really want to get into it if I can help it.

TIA/VRI</thread jack>

Well, I've got my new Joomla 1.5 (non-RE) website up & running, and as previously discussed in this thread, it wasn't very easy! That said, having studied a lot, and finally figured it out and done it, doing it again wouldn't be all that difficult. Like anything else, the first time is the toughest. The second time would be easier, and after that, a piece of cake! However, the day-to-day post-implementation issues, like regular database backups, database management and tuning, since it is all MySQL based, would be tedious chores I wouldn't wish on a non-technical person.

Still, the wealth of open source and commercial plug-ins and extensions is attractive. Thousands of free and cheap templates, blogs, forums, user registration and management tools, lots of menu options, easy menu management and content management tools, SEO friendly urls, Google XML sitemap generators, multi-media support, smartphone and PDA css support, and on and on. In my dreams, I see a Joomla 1.x based REW CMS3, with ability for REW to install (and customize) for us, many of the available open source Joomla plug-ins and extensions, all in PHP and MySQL.

Congrats on the new site! You are way ahead of me on the technical side of things - so if you had issues, its certainly not something that I want to be tackling.

Ronnie

Everyone told me when I made my Joomla site, the learning curve is steep but definitely worth it. I have to say after about 8 months of using Joomla it has become a little easier. I definitely am not tech savvy, and that has probably made learning slower for me. Personally I am still sometimes amazed at the amount of free modules and components. I hope my learning curve continues as I am looking to create a second Joomla based site.

I'm with Ronnie on wishing for the ability to use Open Source plugins on REW CMS.

Maybe I am a quick learner, but once you grasp the basics, Joomla isn't that hard. I am no expert by any means, yet.

Exactly, the basics with it are opposite of my logic pattern. When my mind got pointed in the right direction by the book I posted about, then the productivity went up 1000%. I think three pages in the book were worth the cost. It's been about 2 years since I fooled with it, but it is a powerful dynamic web platform.

I've been using Joomla to setup several different websites. As long as you can ftp files, setup a mysql db with name/un/pw and you can chmod, you can setup a joomla site. The templates.... the 1000's of templates are enough to spend a weeks looking at as well as the extensions (components and modules) being incredible aswell. I'm taking on a project right now with integrating open realty into a joomla site. It has been the most challenging so far, but it was still semi functional in an hour or so.

How do you like using OR? I have been using it on my site and thus far it seems like a great extension.
