I noticed some of my colleagues sites were gone for a few months then recently they started showing back up again. Never figured out why.

My site recently just dropped out of MSN SERP's as well. I didn't get very much traffic from MSN anyways so it really hasn't affected my traffic. Same thing happen a few months ago and a few weeks later I magically appeared again.

this happens to me as well. There one day and gone the next. still have yet to figure msn out, but not on top of my to do list due to small percentage of traffic in SEs

Yes, last stat I saw on MSN had them between 3-8% of all US searches. I am sure it is great for some niches. Never did see what the demographics of their user base is.
