Here is a strange question.

I have a site map for my site. When I look at the sitemap overview in google webmaster tools it shows 12002 urls and 2429 indexed urls. If I go to the index stats it show 16,600 pages indexed.

Can anyone explain why the two different numbers??

I have noticed this discrepancy as well, but I don't have an explanation for it.

I forgot to mention, that one explanation I've heard is that the information in Webmaster tools is only updated twice a month.

I can't remember where I heard that, and it could be a little bit off, but the lag could partially explain things.

However, I still think there is more to it than that. Probably that Google is not giving us all the information, or that there is more than one definition of "indexed page" or something like that.
