Oops...misread your question.
Onsite blogs serve a number of purposes. Used correctly they can assist with linkbuilding, frequent and deep search engine visits and a number of things IMO. Offsite blogs can perform some of the similar things. I like offsite blogs when dealing with specific niches. best; Eric

My question is can you get an onsite blog on your domain, to rank and post on the SE's just like you can an offsite blog? By offsite blog I mean your own offsite blog that you control and own. Or is there more of an advantage to your own offsite blog, rather than your own onsite blog?

If I had to start over again, I'd prioritize like Wayne did above - with the effort going to the onsite blog. It is easier to build authority to one domain.
I still like doing niche (and hyperlocal) blogs as well. Just my .02 Eric

@Mark - yes I think you can get your onsite blog to rank that well and then it is yours. I think blogging is a form of prospecting but I am not the best at keeping up all the blogs as I should.
One way to do it is to have different themes for each blog. Because my site has plenty of Real Estate Info - I use my onsite blog to blog about local interest stuff like restaurants, things to do, and events. More of a laid back thing where I use the REW blog for RE info and how to RE stuff. Blogs are a great way to communicate - develop friendships - and draw clients. Yes, I do get clients from my blogs. Thoughts??

Our plan is to post on our blog, then go to Activerain and one or two more and post a summary with a link to our site blog.
