Curious as to what that lesson learned was... that you "get what you pay for" or that "cloning" a site "in all functionalities and appearance" is horribly unethical and likely quite illegal?

The latter along with the former. To tell you only the latter, would be a lie. And to tell you only the former, would be a lie too. I learned that copying a site is wrong, and that I wouldn't want my name and business to be associated with trouble and copycat-ism. And I also learned that outsourcing, like Tim Ferriss made it sound, isn't as easy as pie. That's what I learned.

I found out about getacoder in November 2007, saw a bunch of projects for clones, and thought it was okay to do so. Was I right? No. Did I know it was illegal? No. Am I stupid for what I've done? Yes. The developers told me they'll make something that won't and cannot be sued. Did I believe them? Yes. Was I incredibly naive believing them? Yes.

If there's anything else you want to bash me with, go ahead. Do I deserve it? Yes. But am I creating something from scratch, doing it the right way now? Yes. And truthfully, that's all that matters to me now.

I'm human. I'm new to business. I made a mistake. I was green then. I learned my lesson. I just hope in this forum I'm not haunted or known as the "thief" or something forever. I didn't make any money from it, it's not being used, it never will be used, it cannot be used.

People make mistakes and as long as you learn from them, it's all good

Tareu,
It takes a lot to man up and write a post like this (I have had to do a few in my day as well, especially with my how shall we say "outgoing" nature) and I although what you did was wrong, and I do have a particular sore spot for having my work ripped off, I do respect your response - so good on you
