What does "Amazon" have to do with books?

What the heck is a "Zillow" or "Trulia"? (Or a Google or a Yahoo for that matter?)
You make a great point in that brandable domain names like these can be a great way to go (especially if they are easy to remember, easy to spell, and easy to pronounce).

That being said, the one HUGE difference between all of those companies you mentioned and the average real estate agent is $$$ - lots and lots of $$$.

If you are one of the big players with lots of money to spend on building your brand then by all means go with a brandable domain name but if you are John Smith Real Estate Agent with a limited budget then buying a purely brandable domain name that doesnt sound like anything at all related to real estate could be a huge mistake.

One great strategy though for finding a brandable domain name is to start with your target keyword and then add some sort of unique name to the end (i.e. "Phoenix Real Estate" + "Pro" = PhoenizRealEstatePro.com etc.)

Here is a list of 25 tips for choosing a domain name if you want some more ideas.

There is a WHOLE lot more to it than domain names....
Definitely agree with you on this point although its important to keep in mind that as a smaller player a domain name can be one competitive advantage that is impossible for a deep pocketed competitor to duplicate (i.e. because every domain name is unique). It's easy for a Trulia or Zillow or someone to out market you because they have so much money - however, if you own a great keyword domain name that gives some small SEO benefit then that is something that they cannot duplicate unless they buy your domain name from you.

JoelJonathan's list is interesting, and points out that sometimes automated keyword tools aren't so swift. KingmanPhoenix.com? Those two cities are over 200 miles apart. Why would anyone want to rank for both locations?
Of course not every domain name in the list is good and maybe someone won't like any of them - the point is: I entered in my desired keyword ("Phoenix Real Estate") and in 15 seconds I got 50+ potential keyword domain names all of them exact matches to keywords that get searched in Google every month. Can any of us think of 50+ keyword domain names in 10 seconds? Of course we can't and of course we still have to put our brains to good use and sort through the domains and see if we can find any ones that we like.

While keywords are really important, I think link popularity is 800 pound gorilla.

To win with Google, you have to think like Google… As stated above, keywords are relatively easy to manipulate. Therefore, it is entirely possible for the website owner to tweak his keywords until he ranks well. Google works very hard to law for "honest" search results and attempts to thwart attempts to manipulate ranking. With this in mind, Google gives more weight to link popularity. This is due to the fact that is much harder to manipulate…

Of course, Google needs the keywords to "know" what the site is all about. Knowing this, keywords will always have their place in the SEO world…

Pick a name, design a good site and then optimize for whatever terms you are trying for. You gotta give up on that domain you wrote about in the other thread - it will only cause you trouble later. Real Estate agents KNOW all about this - for the most part realtor can not be used in a domain name - we probably all know people that this has been a problem for. Trust us on this.

Just because a site gets an advantage in ranking well for a keyword in SERPs because of having keywords in the domain does not suggest that then the site will only rank well for that keyword. The two premises are not equivalent nor are they necessarily linked. Every so often this discussion comes up on forums and the answer is simple. Yes, having keywords in the domain gives you an advantage for ranking for a specific keyword. Do you need to have keywords in your domain name to do well in SERPs. NO! Will having keywords in your domain prevent you from ranking well for other keywords. HECK NO! If you happen to be lucky enough to pick up a domain name that has your keywords in it great. If not don't sweet it.

If anyone wants to see sites using keywords in the domain ranking well or an extended period despite not having many backlinks or content let me know. I have several that I did tests with. Including some that are moderatly competitive. Just remember if you are going after a highly competitive term you will still have to do all the backlink building and on page SEO to rank well. Having keywords in your domain is not the magic bullet it just supplies a small benefit.

Keywords in domain names have very little importance in actual ranking calculations - that’s been the case for years now. The positive effects people see are a consequence of sites linking to the domain using the URL as anchor text - link text containing keywords is what helps the domain rank, not the actual appearance of the keyword in the domain name.
