@Augusta- I (personally speaking) would pay more for 'exact match" domain names rather than variants...unless as Wayne says, they are short and carry some real marketing punch.

One thing that has been left out of the domaining conversation here is a) has the domain expired, b) has it been penalized / banned c) are there currently aged links to it.

There are a lot of considerations that may factor into a domain's value.

Thoughts?

@eric excellent considerations, how would you go about discovereing those types of things

Hmmm...that's a bit longer than I have time for at the moment, but here are some REALLY rudimentary basics...

a) You can do a WHOIS search to see the expiration date.
b) If it ranks OK right now, then you are pretty sure to be OK.
c) You can use Yahoo or any other basic tool to check backlinks the same as you would any other site, competitor, etc.

There are many more things to look at but this is a quick start IMO.

@Eric - True, good points. Also depends if you want to use company's name or keyword rich domain. Or maybe it will have both.

@Larry - If the site is still active I use SEO for Firefox... it gives you a rough overview

For St. John's I would not pay any more than 5 grand. The only reason I would go that high is because of the booming economy and it will be worth a lot more in the coming years.
