High five to you too, Dan. I take it you and Steve have been in these forums long enough to crash/replace enough computers to realize that dates don't mean squat.

Look, Dan, you're not talking about programming either. I suggest that the MODS terminate this thread immediately because no one has anything to say about PROGRAMMING.

Did you not understand my comment about indifference? No one, except me, is offering any shred of information about how to go about promoting real estate. Would somebody please talk about programming and promoting real estate and help the original poster with his question?

Oh?

Here's a lesson for you...

The internet protocol of TCP/IP was established in 1974, and packet switching and other protocols were established prior to that. I'd say that's more than 30 years.

Before TCP/IP and the internet there were what was called Bulletin boards which were the fathers of forums such as these. Some of the first were created and maintained by developers for support of new compilers and languages as they were created. It's what drove the development and popularity of the internet we use today.

In fact, many document sharing systems/bulletin boards existed prior to what we use as browsers today.

Seems your facts and "experience" are in error once again.

I've already provided assistance and information to RESteve.

Please stop providing mis-information to our visitors.

RESteve, my apologies for hijacking and the off topic posts, but when misinformation is posted it does not help and needs clarification.

I'd still like to know what type of application and platform you are considering. It does matter when choosing a language for development.

If you're comfortable with PHP and MySQL and are looking for a framework, take a look at CodeCharge.

That looks like an interesting platform and reasonably priced. Good one.

So it seems that PHP is the most popular choice for web database applications - cool; that's sort of what I expected.

My only caveat to this is that if you have a basic understanding of PHP, enough to get the app functional, then would you take the time to learn a framework?

For future purposes, sure; having the knowledge of CodeCharge, CakePHP, etc. will help you with developing applications faster - but what if that's not what you want to do?

The application I was building - it's sort of in a dormant state - was a contact manager for the MyHomeHouston team. Something that could manage leads, follow up, and not be so darn complicated.

None the less, there is some pretty good information scatter in this thread so it'll help me with choosing a platform in the future.

I should just hire someone, to be honest.

Steve,
One of the other PHP/MySQL tools to look at might be the PHPMaker family. It is not really a framework, but more like an application prototyping tool that you can use to build a basic web-based MySQL application, then customize the generated code to whatever additional level of detail you want. PHPReportMaker is the reporting component, with similar prototype then customize ability. I have played with them a bit, but as a reformed programmer (30+ years), I just can't seem to get as excited about coding as I used to, so dropped it.

Ah, thanks Ron. I'm really good at modifying code - I can usually go in and figure out what's on going and change/fix issues, so that might be a really useful tool for me.

I am working on a RE project in Rails. It is great for database driven apps. You can get a prototype up and running very quickly.
