I called my host (bluehost) and asked about needing a license they said it is just for security to make sure we are how we say we are.

Do you need a license to use SSH2?

The host (bluehost.com) says that it is for security. To make sure we are acutally the people that own the site and not just soem random person.

I had an ecommerce site hosted here and the hacker was getting in through the shell access on the shared server. Change providers. This one sucks. Hosts need to be monitoring their servers for this kind of intrusion and bluehost doesn't.

I had that site locked down tight but it doesn't matter when they can access your site through the server.

I switched to a different host, still a shared server but they monitor their servers for this kind of attack and i have not had a problem in 6 months.

if you haven't already, upon gaining access to SSH2, you will need an FTP client that supports SFTP. They are everywhere, just not all do support SFTP. forgot to mention that earlier.

but yes, make sure your host is keeping an eye on their servers. do some searching on the net, read reviews, etc., as nothing can be more of a headache than a poor host provider.

I'm with HostGator, and have had no problems thus far (over a year now), and setting up SSH2, SSL (Secure Socket Layer / https://), dedicated ip address, and so on, have been a breeze. they allow full control over your domain, including your php.ini file which is nice (for PHP developers).

here's a link to HostGator in case you decided to have a look .. they also transfer your site free of charge (one time only), so there's really no hassle.

HostGator

Thanks for the help!

The site was going along fine for over a year, then last month it started with all this haking. And it seems no matter what I do it does not stop. I have full control, including the php.ini file.

You may want to consider moving to a host that has a hardened server.

Problem Solved: We moved hosts to hostgator (from bluehost). The folks at hostgator are wonderful to work with and helped me find and fix all the issues. And the warning has been released by G!

Thanks to all that helped with this issue.

Glad to hear that it worked out.

It's also a good idea to keep wordpress updated. I had a site running wordpress 2.3 and it was hacked a few times. I updated to 2.8 a couple of weeks ago and haven't had any problems.
