Default Uber Nerd Thread

Express your nerdiness here. What makes you a nerd?

What makes me a nerd? The fact that I get so excited about any horror movie that comes out, even though I know it will end up being terrible. Often I will watch the movie, state that it's awful and go buy it a day later.

I collect random comic books. Mostly for the art(I do comic book art myself). I can't get over how cool Spider-man and the X-men are.

I'm addicted to older super hero tv shows like the Mid-90s Spider-man Cartoon and The early 90s X-men Cartoon(So freakin' good).

I love social networking sites like Myspace.com and Facebook.

I have amassed a large database in my head of useless pop culture trivia spanning the last 40 years. Mostly related to music and horror movies.

That felt good.

I love video games. I'll often spend a whole day on the weekend just playing old SNES games or N64 games and not regret it one bit. I was into mmorpgs for awhile but not so much anymore.

I'm almost pretty stuck on social networking, facebook especially. It's just so cool to be able to hook up with people you went to school with so long ago.

I love watching PBS (Nova is RAD! I can't say I have watched it all but Red Dwarf is forever part of my cultural upbringing).

LOTR fanboy, I've been in a Star Wars online club and have roleplayed with them IRL (no LARP-ing for me).

I get excited when a new gaming technology comes out (Unreal Engine 3 is amazing! Have you seen what Peter Molineau is working on?).

5 letters: MST3K. Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Look it up.

I still use a Hotmail account from before they were purchased by Microsoft, and I still remember my ICQ number. 4140629

I own (with my wife) the following gaming systems:
1. Commodore 64 (suitcase model with built-in sceen)
2. Atari 2600
3. NES
4. SNES (regular model and small limited release)
5. Genesis
6. Gameboy (B&W brick)
7. Gameboy Colour
8. Gameboy Advance
9. Gameboy Micro
10. Gameboy Advance SP
11. Nintendo DS
12. Sega Dreamcast
13. Playstation Mini
14. Playstation 2
15. Xbox
16. Xbox 360
17. Nintendo Wii
18. Used to have a sit-down Asteroids arcade machine, but it is being exchanged for another arcade machine
19. Gaming PC that also runs Linux
20. Almost forgot the green, limited edition DK Green Nintendo 64

I forgot to mention the over 30 board games (mostly specialty ones from Europe) that we own.

Oh, and I ran a videogame store for 5 years.

Gees! After reading REW Reed's post, maybe we should start a support group or intervention program! Maybe a nerds anonymous forum complete with a 12-step recovery plan!

Yeah, Reed Takes the cake....

I consider myself a Mini-nerd,.....I am small...

I have been on the computer since i was 5 and knew how to run dos and showed my parents how...they'd always ask me to open programs for them....

I play MMORPGs....Mostly just world of warcraft, trying to get a character to 70 since my BF has two already! We are looking for new games to explore since we been playing WoW since beta.....about 3 years now almost i think....will play some Mario Party and Smash Brothers and Donkey Konga when i have the chance,....i really need to get donkey konga!

I like to play air guitar/bass.....But mostly cuz im practicing my fingering without actually using the instrument to save my fingers.....But as my friend told me this weekend, its only lame to play air guitar/bass if you dont actually know how to play real guitar or bass....which i do...

I am hardcore into watching Stargate: SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.....laugh all you want I dont care. I used to not like it but after i gave it a chance it turned out to be a neat show....and i love all the references to egyptian mythology and whatnot......and other mythology....Plus SG-1 is shot in Vancouver, or it was at one point, and my Sisters Ex (Who is a nice guy) used to work on the set.

I think that is most of my geekyness, not trying to win any prizes, thats why i call me a mini nerd, i am quite nerdy, but not to the extent of some of my co workers

The funny thing is, I'm by far one of the most normal people of all of my friends.

Some of my friends not only watch Red Dwarf but can quote the entire series.

My ex-girlfriend and her brother are the biggest LOTR geeks I have ever met. They can give lectures on the chronology of Middle Earth. I was only in the SW club for a few months, and the people in it were pretty obsessed.

The gaming technology thing comes from having a Bachelor's of Science in Computer Science and once wanting to get into game development. Although rewarding, it's a really tough industry to break into.

The video game collection pales in comparison with the person I'm getting the arcade machine from. He once owned over 30 arcade and pinball machines, and has the systems I have plus another 20 you have never heard of.

My sister-in-law's boyfriend has so many board games that he is writing a book on them and will often get shipped the first ones to playtest before they go to production. Probably several hundred.

I'm just a little bit of all of my crazy friends, who all happen to be geeks.

And I DO have a support group. She's my wife and is just as bad as I am.

I was born the year NES came out, and I HAD one.

List of video game systems I have owned at one time:
NES
SNES
Sega Genesis
Sega CD
Gameboy (original)
Gameboy Pocket (2)
Gameboy Advance
Playstation
Dreamcast
Virtual Boy(sold that thing sooo fast.... gave horrible headaches)
Gameboy DS (original silver and black lite)
Playstation 2
Xbox
Playstation 3
Wii

That isn't counting the computers I've built and owned over the years

I had a computer.. black screen, orange text, dos. No idea of the stats, as I was insanely young when I had it. It had DoS quicken, and I typed stuff out to print on it. Most other kids never saw one except in the library.

I had 28.8 when it first hit my neighborhood. Had it on my Powermac. Got 56k when it was first out in my neighborhood too.

Got an AMD-k6 on my 13th birthday, and it was decent. I still miss 98 SE. I remember taking the leap from powermac to a pc.

Built my first computer, amd 2000 with a geforce 6600 card. It failed horribly (PSU was too weak).

Builty my second computer, it was my brothers. amd 3200 and geforce 6800. It worked. He would still be using it, but he upgraded to a newer one.

My current rig, amd 4000 geofrce 7800gtx. I have almost 1 TB of storage.

I've played FFXI and WoW (FFXI didn't last two weeks, WoW I was in since day 1 of it going on sale).

Speaking of foreign board games... Settlers of Catan anyone?

Oh.. one last nerdcore item on my list.

I went to college, and got my degree in Computer Science, ..... Video Game Design. No joke

I hope I qualify for uber nerd status.

Some highlights of my nerdy past - not that I would hit Red's league, but still:

I played Crusader - No Remorse from Friday afternoon all the way through Saturday noon, with four bathroom breaks

I played demo of the first C&C over 50 times in a row

I bought the very first issue of PC Gamer

I could complete the first level of Doom with my eyes closed

I spent over $500 on 64 MB RAM and a new video card just to play Decent

Two of my buddies and I won an online Rainbow Six tourney and won a gift box including a Tom Clancy autographed book.

I was a Mosaic beta tester - that goes to show you I'm not only uber-geek, but an uber-old geek ;-)
