How do you know you were "hand picked"? Unless you did something pretty bad, or someones got it out for you, I have never heard of that happening to any web directory. Either way you are doing great thus far, and im sure you will be up top within the year.

Whoever came up with this discussion of Google "hand editing", it's just hilarious. It's comforting though because it just shows how little the competition knows about ranking well in google over the long term. No analytics package can show or prove that, nothing can prove that...and while it may occur for very large spammers, a tiny, 6 month old real estate site targeting atlanta? Cmon, get over yourself. If you were hand edited as you say, then you might as well hang it up with that domain, because manual removal involves much more than a slap on the hand with a reinclusion request.

I'm definintely NOT willing to speculate, but, it has happened to others before and it will happen to others again. I can assure you that my linking practices were pretty standard state recip links and contextual links.

Most of what I have done is through hard work and writing unique content on various authority websites, not black hat stuff and not paid stuff. I try to only write about my market or real estate in general that might be helpful to others.

That's it. I just haven't gone back and edited some of my webpages to weed through redundant terms like that first paragraph and my alt tags.

Thanks

Netstorm,

That is not it. I am not going to divulge much on this as I hope you guys will understand.

In visitor segment peroformance, under network location it says "google inc" - location "mountain view".

Suffice it to say that they have been there directly and through an organic search - the search phrase is unimportant (or, I should say, not going to be divulged).

There is more, but, that is all I am willing to say. I'm sorry, but, I just can't.

That is all you need to say Ryan, Calc seems to want to argue the point to death.

At this point does it really matter what that finest point is. Is not the broader point already made. Massive Recip Links = Bad Bad Bad State Pages = Bad Bad Bad, Some Reciprocal links OK, but lousing value, Other ways of building up a site need to be found including Blogs, Squidoo, Contextual links, One way links, Generally good content for the user and google, a nice easy to read website without tricks and general deceptive things going on.

Not trying to be mean Calc but it does seem like for now there should be enough data available to say that the list I gave above is probably fairly close to what someone really needs to be doing.

netstorm, you are off-base about googlebot. Google Analytics tracks via javascript so bots never show up. I very much believe Ryan saw a visit from Google and it was a real person. That doesn't mean it was a hand edit though.

Here's my take on Ryan's visit from G:
