That is correct. When you are using “” tags…use them wisely. It is never a good idea to have more than one H1 tag on the same page. However it is always a good idea to use a hierarchy of H tags so as long as the outline of your subject matter justifies it.

So if we aren't suppose to use more then one H1 per page would you virtually want to creat a new page when you came to a point wheree you felt like another H1 was neccessary?

Google does place a larger impact on H1-H3 tags. It values H1's the most and H3's the least. The reason being is it considers H1's as the topic's of your pages, H2's as subtopics, and H3's and subtopics of H2's. Therefore, you will probably use H1's the least and H3's the most, which is why Google places the most value on H1's.

One thing you might consider is modifying your H1 tags into your stylesheets so that they actually compliment the looks of your website. The default use of an H1 tag is pretty big and may not look good on your site without a little stylesheet modification.

What would be overuse. Is there a guideline like on H tag per 100 words?

Possible guidelines:
  • If you can see several headings without having to scroll, there might be too many headings (unless the body container is very wide, or text is small).
  • Perhaps the height of the paragraphs should be at least twice the height of the headings which precede them.
  • If every single paragraph has its own heading, then that would mean that each new paragraph is about something new, and therefore, no ideas or information are really being developed.

I have posted an article of a research study. It was in German so I had it translated via google translator. It suggests that H1's have little importance and that it is the later tags that really make a difference.

I've read somewhere that only H1's have value in SEO. As for the reason, that I don't know

Not true. One recent study actually showed that h2-h6 actually influenced the rankings more than h1... I wouldn't take that to heart, but it shows that all header tags have some sort of influence.
