O.K. I just got the clearance I needed. I checked with both local MLS's and the Georgia Real Estate Commission. This was the response that I received that gave me the go ahead with the domain choice:

Quote:
Hello,
No, we do not have any rules in place restricting that. “MLS” is actually a generic name meaning Metro Listing Service. The initial identifier is what makes it proprietary ie: GeorgiaMLS, FirstMLS, SoCalMLS etc… As long as it is appropriate, you can use whatever you like.
Thank you,
I have purchased the domain freethemls.com and will get something up as soon as it is available.

Now it's time to get some suggestions started as to what we can do with it.

My first suggestions are:
  1. Develop an online petition to rescind the order.
  2. Develop a campaign strategy to target others
  3. Develop/locate any necessary documentation to support the petition
Lots more, but these are my firsts.

It would be nice to blast a call to action email to every Realtor in the US and beyond. I know that there are places that sell this email list...if one was freely contributed that sure would help.

I have a fairly current REALTOR E-mail list with around 1.2 million addresses. I would be more than happy to contribute it... I just don't know how to get it from my disc to somebody who could use it - definitely too large of a database to e-mail.

If somebody wants it, let me know.

Wow this sounds great, exactly what we need once the site gets ironed out...but if we find some way to email all of these people I'm guessing the website will come to a screeching halt. Maybe Morgan can shed some light on this about how we could email to such a huge list and also how to handle the ensuing traffic.

Do you think that a call to action about this would be spam?

This is DEFINITELY not spam as we are not trying to sell anything. What I was talking about was the main website (www.freethemls.com) will not be able to handle the traffic of thousands of visitors at one time once this email goes out...the server hosting the website would essentially experience a denial of service attack.

While I agree with your assessment, in actuality it can be considered spam by an ISP.

Too many emails in a given period of time can get an account flagged at the ISP level. I know this because another company I own had been flagged this way by the ISP. When flagged in this way, several things may occur: The ISP may prohibit all outgoing emails from the account or limit the number of emails per day from an account.

Also, anyone can flag anyone at any time as a spammer. There are many sites, one can submit an email as a spammer. Some people just have too much time on their hands with nothing better to do.

I have first hand experience with this from our board. This forced our board to provide a "do not contact me' option for agent profiles.
