Well, Yes! The more links that you have with keyword rich anchor text the better you will wind up doing in the SERPs. Use different variations of anchor text to look natural.

690 is a good start. Keep building. There are endless ways to build up links to your site that will help you in the SERPs. You have to get creative. Do alot of research and read different forums, blogs, etc. You will eventually start seeing that number grow into the thousands...

I suspect there is some ever changing ratio in their algo that we have to keep trying and adding different components to see. One of the more vexing, but probably good things is that any changes only get indexed once a month more or less, at least on my site. So what I do today I won't see the results as effective or ineffective for awhile. Then others may make changes to their site. We don't truly know if what we did advanced up and what others may have done may have regressed then.

I do believe that the links and strengths of the the links are important. Probably as much so is having some distribution of link strength within the site. After I have gotten my main page to rank for a key term or two I have been building KW specific pages and need to link those to other site to drive them up. I am beginning to believe that the 5 mile long first page that you had, had merit based on the linking and KW's that it has. I am finding as I search and see what terms I do come up for and others that I am no where to be seen and wonder why. If I add a sentence or two on the subject I think I am going to start showing up for the search term. Then I have to start working on the individual page and see what I may need to do to change the title tag and see what I need for links on the page.

I have found pages don't seem to count for alot on a site, at least on mine. I think the links are the primary algo, content. I have seen pr4's below me and pr2's above me.
All links are important, but not created equal. For the most part, any dofollow link (For Google) will help as long as it is keyword rich and appears to be natural. Yahoo will follow and count ANY link. Links in forum sigs, blog comments, and profiles will not have as much value as a link that is built into a page's content and appears naturally. The PR of the links does have some importance, but generally unless you are going to pay , it will be devalued because the PR will most likely be spread out to many, many different sites. If you found it, chances are so will many others. PR of the sites in the SERPs means nothing. Don't pay attention to it....

Thats the best tool to use. Just as reliable and accurate as anything you will pay for. If you want to see your links in Google, use webmaster tools.

OK, so 690 is good, but I guess what I don't understand is what the 690 counts for. Is it 690 other sites linking to mine?

Yes. If you use some of the linking tools and enter your URL, you will see. Check and see who is ahead of you in areas and see what their link count is.I do no know what is a good amount, but I imagine it varies depending on the competition in your area. It and content are the things I am working on along with the title tags.
