So I'm looking to get a poll out for those of you that build your own applications or outsource them.
What's your language of choice? Basic PHP, PHP w/ Framework, Ruby, DJango, Rails, etc.? I've learned a good bit of PHP, worked with MySQL, but I'm starting to lean to learning Rails, or perhaps, using a framework like CakePHP or Zend.

I am using PHP together with MySQL. But I also use a lot of Javascript for Client side scripts.

When you say application, can you be more specific? Web app, web page app, client app, database app etc?
There are many programming languages that offer varying and significant features over others depending on the platform, type of application and usage. While php is a nice powerful language for websites, IMO it is not what I would use for developing complex applications.

Just use PHP and mysql. Jesseisc, in my opinion, has no reason to separate anything. By the way, Zend IS PHP. You seem to be confused.
Look, there's a HOOK (PHP, ASP, CFM), and then there's a storage database online (MYSQL, MSQL, ...who cares). All you have to do is get the stuff (in your database) you want to show someone (on the Web) to the page they're asking for as soon as possible. 80% of the people on the planet are broadcasting their information on the Internet using: a UNIX platform, an APACHE server, PHP programming and a MySQL database because... they are all free and there are more engineers and programmers working and helping everyone else in the world than anywhere under the sun, and I'm one of them. When in doubt, go to INTERNATIONAL standards, not those recommended on a forum of any type. Your clients' publications stand a better chance of surviving if you do.

Perhaps you could be just a bit more condescending in your comments in the future. I'm sure we'd all be better off with the tone of your posts, then the current helpful atmosphere we've had here for several years. Quote:
Who said RESteve's application was for internet consumption or a database application for that matter? Try using php, asp or cfm for PDA development or a .net platform. It's called analysis "langard, and I use that term lightly", it's what professional developers do "before" they hand over an application to their customers (which are users by the way, in case you are unclear of the concept) which their customer didn't want to begin with. It's called understanding your clients needs, not promoting what "the developer" believes. If you have an opinion, it can be stated without rudeness or attacks on our community members. This has always been a friendly open forum for those who wish to share information with others and learn from those with more experience. At least, until this post. Back off and be polite. If you have information of value to share, great. If you're here to start something go somewhere else with these types of comments are welcome.

I'm also thinkng that "ReSteve" just put this post up to promote himself, since he hasn't answered anything in a couple of months.
Imagine that, a real estate agent trying to promote himself. I'm guessing that Steve doesn't program anything, but that's just speculation, like buying condo stock in Reno, 'Vegas or Aspen right now I suppose.

I'm guessing the whole moderator tag doesn't really mean anything to you, lol. None the less, no, I'm not promoting anything - just venturing into a hobby into programming some things I've always wanted to do.

Nope, your tag doesn't mean anything at all. Should it? Hobby programming is just that, an avocation and not a sincere, full time effort to produce an inexpensive, quality business product online. REW does that with PHP.
This site uses PHP almost exclusively as a primary programming language, and so do the sites they build for clients. This is a PHP-based forum construct. Your responses are processed by PHP. FYI, I've been in these forums longer than you and jessesc both, but longevity (including my own) has no juice so far as I'm concerned. Expertise does. I suggest you find the programming language that you feel most comfortable with. I already told you what 80% of the world uses, but you can study what ever you wish as a hobby. You can program applications with PHP that can be broadcast to Blackberrys, PDFs, online readers... or anything else currently available on the planet. You can write them in SGML, XML, XHTML, C, C+, C++, or anything else you want to devote your time to. Use .net programming if you want to be like jessiesc, I guess. It doesn't matter. This thread is supposed to be about programming. So I suggest you think ahead a little and consider what languages are even going to be in existence (at all) in five years -- just to keep from having to learn everything all over again. If you'd rather discuss decorum or opinion, I offer none. Perhaps I presume too much by assuming that the people who frequent these forums are looking for legitimate answers to important questions regarding how to best represent and sell real estate. I'm in real estate to make money. If you have some higher goals or objectives, pay no attention to what I say. If you also think that the best business advise is always kind and gentle, you are wrong. I'm not in these forums to stroke other real estate brokers and attorneys. I'm here (occasionally) to see what the industry needs -- particularly in a horrible economy like this one -- and make recommendations based upon 20 years of programming and publication. So take a pill. How many other folks do you know in this, or any other, forum that are trying to tell you something more than what happens with Google every four hours?

Ugh...the Internet hasn't been in existence for 30 years. What was your name on the Bulletin Boards jessiesc? Once again: Do you have something to contribute regarding actual programming that occurs today to help real estate dealers who are looking to promote their business in an efficient and timely manner? Please don't turn this thread into a snivel sheet. If you want to criticize me, do it personally and post something that addresses the initial inquiry.
