I'm pretty sure the rules about traveling without a passport changed and now you need one even to go through Seattle and the ferry. Getting a passport isn't that painful - so better to just get one.

You're right...the rules may have changed and yes, its easy to get a passport. I got one in less than 2 weeks. You'll need a birth certificate, drivers license..stuff like that and a few checks...call ahead to be sure. My local post office was able to do everything very efficiently.

You absolutely DO need to have a passport so recommend getting that ASAP
In terms of flying in - both options work Fly to seattle then drive then ferry (or ferry then drive) or fly in to Vancouver (this is my preference) and then I take the float plane from Vancouver Airport to Nanaimo.

Morgan can you give us a little more information on the float planes. How do you get from the Vancouver airport to where the float planes take off - is that difficult. I flew into the Nanaimo airport vs. one of the other ways last time because I was traveling by myself (which for anyone else considering that - worked out just great) wondering how complicated it is to get to the planes in Vancouver because once you get to Nanaimo you are walking distance to the hotel and conference center - which is cool.

Float planes take off 5 mins away from the Vancouver Airport you hop in a $10 max cab ride to the float planes.
Here are the two that I have used http://www.harbour-air.com/ http://www.seairseaplanes.com/ They should have their fees and schedules there. I forgot to mention as you said, it doesn't have to be a float plane, you can go big plane from Vancouver to Nanaimo and then it's a 15 min max cab ride downtown.

I know this is going to open up the floodgates (grin) but I'm in! I'm swimming from Vancouver...seriously, anyone who's on the fence, go. You won't regret it. Undoubtedly, one nugget, one relationship will pay back the travel expenses 10 fold. Besides that, it's an incredibly cool experience. I'm looking forward to it already...

What's best way to get to Nanaimo? I looked for flights but couldn't find any direct. Are there only hoppers going there?
I thought I saw somewhere there was a ferry? Information, need more information LOL

Jessie, Fly into Vancouver and take a ferry over to Nanaimo. Maybe go in a couple days ahead and spend some time in Vancouver.

Hi Jessie, I wasn't planning on it, but of course all this talk has planted the seed and I'm thinking.
I see that Kevin K is going...Kevin I know your schedule has to be crazy w/your recent move..I give you alot of credit. Then to actually swim across from now that would be an event in itself! ;-)
