I think utilizing hashtags is a much more effective way of getting followers. Hashtags combined with content is the way to go. Twitter might go the same way myspace went, in that accounts were suspended if they were using add bots and similar services.

Twitter went on a ban rampage already and reinstated accounts. Now they have added the spam report option.
They finally seem to realize that it is not really the add-bots doing the harm, but the ones who use many accounts to spam the trending topics and @reply users from several accounts.

You don't need to auto add people. Tweetdeck allows you to get into targeted discussions even if you have 10 followers. I have seen people close deals just by hitting the right convos at the right times.

If you have only one account, it should be a gradual growing process where your account represents you and what you do.

I have a twitter account but I don't use automated tools (some say gimmicks) just to increase follower counts.

I think it is better to have followers naturally which means they follow me because they find my posts valuable or we have a good network relationship and not because i followed them.
