Default Mod Rewrite Any success stories ?

I have been fiddling around with mod rewrite on a few of the sites, and have actually come across some pretty OUT STANDING results, any one else had some success stories ? Thought this might be a good topic to discuss

I rewrite the url's on all of my sites as they are developed, as I believe that most do, so I don't know what you might be looking for in success stories.

It would seem that with the advances in search engines that it would have less effect now than ever, but haven't put one out there without a rewrite. What type of OUTSTANDING results have you seen?

Tricky one that i have been experimenting with, which is sort of only possible if you know your way round the cms, using content duplication, and rewrites, so that the same content can be accessed in multiple url locations. This has been tearing up the search engines lately, i had an increase in search engine results of around 500%. So thats a interesting technique i thought i might share. Not for the faint hearted, and alot of planning involved

I'd strongly suggest you reconsider that one... having the same content accessed by multiple URL's on your site is never a good idea.

I second VRI. Precisely the reason Google came out with rel="canonical".

Im not sure on that, as in it has been some thing i have been experimenting with, im just using mod rewrite to ensure that all content has the best fit url to meta to content, which some times has involved having 2 urls to 1 location. But you are right, i have thought about the caution to take, about multiple urls to 1 destination, never the less it is showing results. What exactly is it bad for out of curiosity ? site integrity etc ?

Go search for "Big Daddy" update from G. That was back in 2004 or 2005. We used to get tickled playing the game you are. It all changed with Big Daddy. You are playing with gasoline and have struck a match! Better step back!

http://www.google.com/search?q=big+d...L_enUS305US305

Also search for reciprocal linking, and canonicals.

Do as you please, but there are a number of people here that would highly advise you against what you are doing.

We used to get seperate results for site addresses with the www. and without it. If you will notice in G Webmaster Tools, you can tell G which to use (www. or non www.) this just goes to show you that if with and without a www. can be problematic, so can what you are doing.

O i see, yeah i think i will just be very careful, as there is only a few places where i have pointed 2 urls to, so i may just remove them. This was very handy to know, i will see if i can tweak this concept then, so it lines up with bigdaddy indexing standards. As to avoid problematic ends down the track
