Default How does one rank #1 with hardly any engine placement

How is this possible? From incoming links?

I need to learn this technique.

There is a competitors website on MSN that is the first listed site with my keywords. When I check their links they have hardly nothing!

Can anyone please enlighten me?

Thanks.

MSN seems to favor websites that are updated frequently. I know when I make changes to my site, it usually shows at the top of MSN for many of my keywords for a few days then falls a few positions.

My site would show high in MSN when my rankings in Yahoo and Google were low. Now that my site is showing higher in Google, it's hard to find my site in MSN...

Makes you think that the google algo and the msn algo have an inverse relationship. Probably not, but just a thought.

They may have very few but very high quality links and there site might be full of unqiue/usefull content.

Not actually sure how msn ranks sites but it quite easy to manipulate.(or so i've heard)

Actually,

This site has very little content and hardly no links at all.

Somehow, they must have received some very high one way links?

It might help if we know the domain name

You can get ranked high pretty quick if your title starts with your keyword, and you use keywords in... an h2, and h3, b, and i

this works for me everytime in MSN - again there is something to the fresh content - you will fade if you do not change things - but fresh is good in all search engines.

When you say fresh content does that mean adding new pages or changing current pages? Add new pages isnt really a problem but I dont want to mess with some of my established pages.

You need to change content on your current pages- the more pages the better, but the problem is when a SE goes to your site and sees stale information- as in, been there, see it before- it over looks it, and will not crawl your site. You need to change your content on at least your homepage- the more often you change it, the more often they come back.

Some of our clients have like 5-7 different homepage text saved, and they just cut and paste a new one every so often.

Also adding features that change on their own is a good idea too- like featured properties and related news feeds.

That is a generalization that is not accurate. Content has nothing to do with crawl rate. Slurp and MSN crawl just about everything, even penalized pages. With googlebot, crawling is determined by links and page rank.

That sounds like a good plan what do you other webmasters have to say about that? Who here has tried it with sucess? What are the risks?
