Here's the thing: if its easy to do, everyone knows about it and everyone else is doing it - then all you are doing is leveling the playing field again to get even with what everyone else is doing. You aren't getting ahead.

You have to do more, and better than your competitors to get ahead of them because theres only 10 spots on the first page.


Side note: Trulia = sign up for your profile to get your link, and then stop. They are a competitor to you for SERPs. Creating content over there establishes them as the authority for your market - not you.


Best free sites for links: create real relationships with others. This will give you opportunities for guest authoring, working on group projects, etc. and they will not be easily acquired links that all your competitors are doing, giving you the ability to actually get ahead of them.
