Hmmm...that's a bit longer than I have time for at the moment, but here are some REALLY rudimentary basics...
a) You can do a WHOIS search to see the expiration date.
b) If it ranks OK right now, then you are pretty sure to be OK.
c) You can use Yahoo or any other basic tool to check backlinks the same as you would any other site, competitor, etc.
There are many more things to look at but this is a quick start IMO.
