Hey Neal:
I am learning this too. I believe a 302 is a temporary re-direct, a 301 is a permanent re-direct, therefore a better choice.

301 = Permanent Redirect
302 = Temporary Redirect

When you use a 302 for redirecting, you're telling search engines to remember your old pages and content at the old locations. Then the search engine will crawl the new location and see the same content. This can create issues related to duplicate content.

Some consider using a 302 as black hat seo because it leaves both pages in a search engines database. Unless the new pages are really only temporary, using a 301 is the safest because it's a done deal.

You can also use the following syntax in your .htaccess to avoid any confusion:

redirectpermanent /index.htm http://www.wheatworks.com/index.php

In addition, search engines are more likely these days to treat both redirects as permanent redirects, simply because it makes more sense and isn't abused as easily. (Read up on page-hijacking about a year or two ago to find out why.)

301 is what you want, though, without question.

I'm curious: Is the above format better -- i.e. more search engine friendly -- than the following?:

redirect 301 /index.html http://www.wheatworks.com/index.php
