Default How many links is too many?

Let me rephrase that. How many links is too many per month when link building for a brand new real estate site.

100 a month? 1000 a month? At what point will Google or the other search engines penalize me for too many too fast?

I have local competitors with over 15,000 links. Even if I collected 1000 a month it would take over a year to catch up. I realize while they may have 15,000 links they are certainly not all quality links. Which leads me to ask what makes a quality link other than just being an indexed page or high PR page?

With the winter months upon us I will have a lot of free time to do little other than collect links for my new sites.

Hi Coatal;

This is just my opinion, but it is on my experience from SEO in other industries. Quality far outwieghs quantity.

While I haven't bumped up against a quantity barrier, there are those who say it is out there--and I would concur. I just think that the best use of my time is to go after high quality IBLs rather than sheer quantity.

I SEO'd a site that was going up against sites with 80,000+ links (however) since many of those links were not passing much at all in the way of rank...and were not very good in anchor text and were not "authority" sites in Google's eyes, I was able to pass the without getting 80,000 links....

You can choose which path to pursue: attracting links from thousands of little value sites or going after the quality. I have just found quality links from a variety of sources to be a better value proposition....

Best;

Eric

BTW- I forgot to mention...I passed the 80,000 link page in the SERPS with only 350 IBLs on Yahoo site Explorer.

Things to look for in links:

1) Indexed site
2) Industry relevant
3) Doing well in Google SERPS themselves
4) AUTHORITY
5) Few outbound links

Best;

Eric

To the original point I think the number of new links per month depends more on where the links are coming from. If you get 10,000 new links a month from a wide variety of places I don't think you will be penalized but if you pick up 500 each month from a known link trading network you might not be doing much good for yourself.

To address the sites with tens of thousands of links, they don't actually have that many links, well not in Google's eyes anyways - the only real way for a local real estate website to get that many links if it they purchase sitewide links on huge sites with hundreds of thousands of pages. It is my opinion that sitewide links are no more valuable (Or barely more valuable) than a link from a main page. So although yahoo reports tens of thousands of links, this does not mean tens of thousands of unique websites linking to you, which is much more important. IMO no-one should ever intentionally try to build tens of thousands of links, if it happens naturally you will not get penalized as they are likely quality and deserved, if you make it happen, it is so obvious that you are trying to game the SE's and you won't get much benefit from them.

You are right it would be very difficult for a local real estate site to ever get 10,000+ new legitimate links in a month but it does happen in on some sites, for instance when YouTube started it probably got that many new links per month. Good news is there is far less competition for Rehoboth Beach Real Estate or in my case Real Estate Exam Products.
