I just received the following from someone I contacted requesting a link exchange:
“Make sure you don't have more than 50 sites per page otherwise search engines will kick you off. they will think your a link farm and that's not good.” I believe that there are several reasons to keep the number of links on one pages down, but that not getting banned is not one of them. What do others here think?

Per Google . . .
http://www.google.com/webmasters/guidelines.html "Keep the links on a given page to a reasonable number (fewer than 100). " "If the site map is larger than 100 or so links, you may want to break the site map into separate pages." However, no threats about page being a link farm. |

They are not going to call you a link farm, but I think it would be nice if people started to limit the number of links on a page. There is little benefit to having a link at position 123 on a page, expecially if there are 400 links on the page with little to no content

In my opinion a good link page should have up to 20-25 links/page, and more then that is better to add some content related to item of page. The number of links should be related to at least 2 points of view.
1. Search engines'. A page with 20-25 links and with some related content cannot be suspected as a link page by any SE. On the contrary they could consider it a "content page" 2. Partners' Any partner is looking for a high quality link. Your page is more attractive if it has 20 links. What will you choose between a page with 20 links and another with 77 links, both having PR=2. The best hope for your PR is an incoming link from the first page. If the item(content) of page is related to your site then will be perfect for traffic as well.

I really think that related content is going to become an important part of a links page. We may need to allow others to write a longer description (w/o keyword spamming) and place the links inside of the description (not first then text).

Ted, funny thing is I may have been the one who told you this as you are linked with my network of sites. Let me explain myself so that others can comment.
The theory is that each page has a link popularity score or link power if you will, due to the incoming links to it. Each page then passes it's link power to the pages it links to and divides it's link power among the pages it links to. For example, if a page has a link power of let's say 100 and it has 3 external links, then each page gets 33 points of power to it. If the same page had 100 outgoing links then each page gets 1 point of power to it. That is the basic idea - not sure of how each search engine uses an algorithm of this sort, but it makes sense as a way of snuffing out link farms. At the least, I would think it not good to have too many links as well as not enough text with those links. Maybe under 100 links is ok, but I keep my sites to under 50 links per page - after all, how hard is it to create a new page as a webmaster? copy/paste.... hope that helps explain my theory.... adam pascu Del mar california real estate mira mesa homes for sale |

The math of the G algo is well documented and is not something about which any of us can have an opinion.
The only factor which remains a secret is the amount of PR passed to links. A common assumption is 85%. A PR4 page with 99 internal links and 1 outgoing only therefore passes 0.0470 to that external link. While I would be happy with the anchor, am no longer accepting such links, after 4000 hours of link work. A link farm is a separate subject and the number of links per page is irrelevant in such a designation. |
