In looking at my site stats a week ago I noticed that I had about 150 more unique visitors per week than the week before. Then I noticed that my site went from #8 to #6 on G's first page of results. That is a pretty good jump in visitors for just two positions up. I could swear that I saw on REW a post about the number of visitors or hits for positions 1-10, but I can't find it. Anybody have these numbers?

Hey Sam;
Congrats on the increase! I did a bit of digging and did not come up with an REW post (although I thought I remember it as well...) Here is some empirical data (albeit just my own...) on what I have seen.. 1) Over 50% of the traffic goes to the Top 2 SERPS (How's that for some incentive to kick it up a notch! )2) Anything that regularly appears "above the fold" (where people do not have to scroll down to see your listing on the SERP) is going to pick significantly more traffic than if it does not. As more browsers are looking at higher resolution, SERPS 4,5,and 6 are doing better this year than last. 3) Since we are affiliated with a national franchise and our competitors were local and independent, we included the franchise name in the title tag and were able to get a SIGNIFICANT increase in traffic dropping down to our site (it was #4 and #5 at the time)...Simply on name recognition, we doubled our traffic overnight. We now are above that in the SERPS ...4) MOST IMPORTANTLY ..now that you are movin' up the top ten...little changes made to your tags can really impact traffic and leads. I once changed my title tags and my ranking went up, but my traffic went down. Fastest change I ever made was to change that back. Once again congrats on the improved ranking... Eric

I can agree that there's a huge difference between 1st or 2nd, 5th and 10th. Since I've started ranking in the top 3 kw's for some big terms in my market, I've seen G pump me with 25% more traffic (10X the traffic for that term).
G still gives me a ton of hits on obscure terms that I'm not trying to optimize for... there's a lot of data there to review for PPC & future SEO.... |
