Do the search engine take keywords out of domainsor just from the source code

Howdy.

I would go with the shorter version. Stuffing additional keywords into a URL won't make a big difference in a page's visibility. The keywords found in the title element and within the page copy carry much more weight. Also, the shorter version is more eyeball friendly for people, and they're your most important audience.

thanks , it was mistake when i found the long one but it got me thinking. Cause this site will be for search engine traffic only

Brandon is correct IMHO, but please make sure not to design a site "for Search Engine traffic only...what he gave you about being "eyeball friendly" is spot on.

I would have to disagree. My original webmaster chose to go with www.Las-Vegas-Nevada-Real-Estate-Relocation.com as our domain name, because it had all our keywords. It did well in Google and MSN, getting top 10 rankings for Las Vegas Real Estate. My new webmaster, did not like the domain name because he said it looked to spammy and that he thought that it could hurt me in the long run. It still sits in the top 10 on Google, but after much discussin we decided to do a 301 redirect to one of my other sites.

I know many webmasters don't like domain names with to many dashes, but I had mine up for over 3 years and never lost ranking or pagerank. My site was actually a PR 6.

So I have yet to see anything that would make me believe that dashes in a domain name hurt you or google doesn't like them.

Just my 2 cents!

I also bought into the hyphen/keyword thing. Although I don't believe it has hurt me in any way if I had the chance to do it over again I wouldn't go with that kind of domain name.

If I remember correctly, the only se that might have liked kw's in a domain was MSN. Don't know if that still stands but I would never create a long, hyphenated domain name again (although I think I'm done with building sites for myself now).

Interesting discusion. I can see adding keywords to your URL improving your ranking on the search engines, but does it help with overall hits. My guess is that you are trading ease of use for the consumer for a slightly higher ranking in Google. The longer URLs are liked by the search engineers, the short URLs are easier to remember and type in.

So how important is it that a potential client can remember your web address and type it in easily -- it is extremely important. Radio, TV, print and other advertisements are typically viewed or heard for about 1 to 5 seconds. That means that potential clients must read and remember your URL in a few seconds. Long URL also means those potential clients are more likely to type in the address incorrectly and not reach your site. Even worse, they could reach your competitors site.

So how would I handle this, I would have 2 URL; One for Google and one to place in other advertisements.

Remember page ranking is a means to an end, not the end in itself.

Thats what I did. I used tonysena.com to drive traffic to my site offline. It would have bee impossible for me to give out my domain name and actually have people remember it, lol.

I also have a short url permanently 301 redirected to use in ads, brochures, business cards, etc.
