Default 301 redirect domain rankings

This is not really that important, more curiosity - Does a redirect URL to my website get indexed and ranked and if so how?

Thanks,

Ryan

Unless an existing url has already been well established and gained Google Trust/Rank on its own before installing the 301 redirect to a different url, no.

If Google knows about the source url, perhaps because it is in a link from another site to yours, it will keep it in supplemental for a time, and it will follow the 301 redirect, but going forward only the target url will survive in the main index. After all, a 301 says that the url is moved permanently. That's why the new url inherits (at least to some degree) the PR of the old one, if any. For the "vanity" domains and PPC landing page domains that I use, I never submit the urls to Google or any other SE or directory, and no one should be linking to them, so they should never even be known to any of the SEs, which is how it should be. They are "signposts", not the destination. I (and the SEs) only want the true destination to be indexed.

I recently changed my url. when I type the old url, it redirects to my new url. Is that considered a 301 redirect? btw, the old url does not get recognized on google searches anymore, as expected.

That depends on how you did the redirect Javascript, 301, 302 and many other types of redirects can make a domain forward to another domain. HOPEFULLY you have used a 301 redirect as that would be the correct choice.
