Sure, there is a purpose....to rank better. But, that person is most likely doing it because the first page you see is not formatted to look pretty like the 3rd site you go to. Not sure why they are doing 2 sites after that.

In other words, the first page has onpage factors that will help it rank in the SERPs. They don't like the way it looks...ie: it does not look like their nice pretty website, so they redirect you.

Out of curiosity, what was the query you typed in to find that page?

Can you post a link? Are you talking about Keller Williams Pages? If so, all of the Keller Williams pages on our market that I have seen feature a redirect. As Jason mentioned, I believe it is an attempt to boost rankings. However, I do not understand much about the effect of redirects on Serps. I just know that it is used frequently by some of the top ranked pages in my keyword phrases.

It'a hard without seeing a link, but I've seen this in other industries as well.

You take a page, stuff it full of topic relevant text and keywords, use <h1> - <h3's and h4's>, <b>, <i> etc. For example:

GREEN WIDGETS!a full selection of GREEN WIDGETS! We have the best flavors MY CITY GREEN WIDGETS and sizes of...

That page wins the battle in the Serps for you, but forwards (redirects) to a page that has proper content. Very common in many industries, and there are services where you can have this 'aplied' to your websites and they do all of the footwork for you.
