I think it's interesting that they are branding themselves as RealEstate.NET when RealEstate.com has been around since 1998. I'm not sure if they (.net) are counting on getting some of the .com traffic bleed, or they just want to go head to head with the .com. A lot of the public does not even know there is a difference between the extentions. IMO if the .net spends heavy on advertising they will end up supporting the .com any thoughts?

There is no question that if you have print advertising that causes type in traffic that many will make a mistake and type .com not .net. If it's only for online purposes then it makes little difference.

Even with just an online presents isn't the goal to build your "brand"? I'm sure that their domain will have plenty of direct navigation. But if you want to build brand loyalty I think you would have to distinguish yourself a bit more then just the difference in TLD.

We do very well out of our .NET domain - We never see the .com version in the serps - We have the age and link juice that I think is much more important.

Duceman;
I agree with your assesment 100%. I don't think it is wise to go the .net route IF you are doing ANY type of type in branding. Too much crossover as you have pointed out. If they are going (purely) after the web traffic, then why pay $300 LARGE for the realestate moniker...hmmm things to think about. You got to admit, they did a good job on their PRWEB press release though...(grin) Eric

Our traffic is 100% online - the .com version is never an issue. It may happen that over time people will search for us using .com but a check of our stats shows the "type in" traffic is mostly "fastrealestate" and not so much fastrealestate.NET so (we don't know about the other). Given a choice I would go back 6 years and get a .com for sure but it's past time for that now... From a serps point of view the .NET works just fine and we displace many of the .coms for competitive terms all the time - I think there are more important factors for our type of site than the domain ext - If I was an agent running in the weekly paper then I would not go past a .com for branding.
http://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=free+real+estate+cla ssified+websites&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 (we should be near the top) http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&c...ipedia&spell=1 I don't think many would argue the value of this site. Much of the .com .net .org value depends on your business model and how it is developed - ![]() Last edited by fastrealestate; 02-04-2007 at 04:00 PM. |
