I was looking at a competitors website and saw that it expires in about a month. What are the rules, if any, that go along with trying to purchase it. For Example:
If they do not renew prior to expiration, do they have a grace period to retain it? How would this work? I realize that they will probably renew, but, I just want to know how it would work if they don't.

Yes, there is a grace period, before a domain is completely deleted and become available to register again. but you can use a "backorder" service, which will grab the domain name and register it to you if it becomes available. such service cost about 12-15$ and if they renew, you can use it for another domain name.

I would recommend using one of these services because there is a large number of "domainers" out there looking to pick up expired domains... you may even miss out on it with one of the services even if you do.

This is true, if you really want this domain name you should backorder with with more then one service.

You can back order for free with Pool.com Snapnames.com and Enom.com. You only have to pay if they catch the name. The minumum price if they get the name is $60. If more than one person backordered the name it will go to a short private auction between the parties that backordered the name.
