Default domain keyword relevance

Hi-

I'm thinking about starting a new company and site from scratch. I'm confident I could be page 1 in my city within a year with REW help.

My question is: should I worry about putting the name of that city in the domain? How much weight does the actual domain carry in SEO?

Eau Claire - Keywords in your domain name once did carry some (limited?)value, but it's been pretty much depreciated by Google. If you have / or can find a domain name that contains your keywords, great, if not I wouldn't worry about it.

A quick check reveals:

EAUCLAIRE.COM is already taken
EAUCLAIREREALESTATE.COM is already taken
EAUCLAIREPROPERTY.COM is already taken
EAUCLAIRELISTINGS.COM is available!

Eau Claire

YES YES YES

Its very important, some say its 15 - 20 % of the ranking.

I think, for the Ranking is the most imported thing Google go for now.

Keyword in the title tag/page title.
Keyword in the URL.
Keyword in the domain name.
Keyword in description meta tag.
Keyword in the H1, H2 and H3.
Keyword density.

You can read more about that in the tread.

Thank God that we have Morgan, the one and only who know EVERYTHING about SEO.

So, Vaughn is totally wrong in his thinking

And

Matt Cutts in his blog regarding imported thing in the ranking.

And

Jim Boykin in his Internet Marketing blog.

I don’t like your attitude, if you can not discuss normal, then can you keep your forum for your self.

thanks for the input everyone.

Morgan - Point made re: Ed Kirkland's site. I assume your position is that he would not have gotten to #1 any faster with "destin" in the domain?

Sundream- Interesting points. Vaughn cites "Keyword in domain name" as factor #2 in his article, HOT, and verified by the patent filed 8/10/06.

However, when I read the patent info he cites here, I don't see anything related to the keyword being in the domain name. It just talks about the domain in terms of who registered it and where it is parked, ie, does the host also host porn.

Am I missing something?

IMO: When seen in organic results or in PPC sponsored ad, the city/town name in the domain name probably gives credibility to the site from a consumer "first blush" perspective, so it might lead to more clicks and visitors for that reason. Therefore it may have overall SEM benefits. But as to SEO benefits, I defer to Morgan and others that it probably doesn't matter much these days.

That said, do a search on "denver home value", "denver home valuation" and similar plurals and variations and see where my denverhomevalue.com domain comes up. It is probably deceptive, because these positions are not really from the domain name, but from SEO for those terms because of geo location, and the fact that is the name of my team, so those keywords have high density on the home page. To me, it is your overall marketing and branding consistency that counts, not just the words in the domain name.

Hi Ron

I agree in this.

After aquick look, did I find that your denverhomevalue.com was the only one on the first page who have denver home value in the url. also the only one who has denver home value in the title and in the description, and you are in the top of the serp. So.. what did that proof ??? I dont know.
