Default forwarding to new url

How do I forward an old url to a new one with no penalty? Is that also through a 301 redirect? if so will this do the all the pages or just the home page: Redirect 301 / http://www.example.com/

I've got a similar question that I posted in "Link Exchange" topic. Not so concerned about the "how to" as that is done through my contol panel but more about the effects on search engines etc. I'm looking at purchasing a number of domain names all being spelling variations of the main site which I will then redirect.

I have successfully launched the new domain and 301 redirects are working great. Question now is do I need to resubmit to the directories such as yahoo? or will the redirects be enough?

IWhen I redirected some sites they were indexed almost right away but I think the traffic started dwindling slowly. They must eventually remove the redirected sites from their listing.
