Cool Is it o.k. to use mirror sites when 2 domains have a different tld, .ie & .co.uk ?

Nobody seemed to be able to answer my original post so I decided to rewrite it? Is it o.k. to use mirrors if the domains are identical except in tld extension, i.e. mydomain.ie and mydomain.co.uk? Does google penalise for this? I mean from everything I've read Google is trying to serve up better regional results? If google does penalise for this it seems ironic considering they are pobably the biggest culprit breaking this rule, i.e. google.ie and google.co.uk are basically mirrors of each other? Anyone any thoughts on this?

Cheers

No it is not ok, what you should do is a proper 301 redirect from one domain to the other so that they both resolve the "same" site, not mirror sites.

Is a 301 redirect the same as forwarding the domain at the Registrar level?

Saodavi;

Here is a quick article on 301 redirects that I have directed people to before.

http://www.webconfs.com/how-to-redirect-a-webpage.php

If you do not want to go through it yourself, I am sure REW et al could help you out.

301 redirects tell the Search Engines that it is a "permanent redirect to the following page."

Edit; The key is that with either address, it resolves RESOLVES to one address.

Hope this helps;

Best

Eric

Does the 301 redirect not mean that certain pages will not be indexed under one of the domains? I.E. what ever domain your doing the redirect on will not come up in the SERPs? As this is the whole point of what I'm trying to do, I want the .co.uk domain results to show for searches through google.co.uk and I want .ie results to show for searches in google.ie. Is this possible?

Cheers and thanks for the replies.

You are going to run into a duplicate content issue, honestly I would not do it. There is no ranking benefit to having a .co.uk vs a .ie it is not going to help your relevance if someone is searching from a particular Google interface. Whether you show up or not has much more to do with your content.

Hi Webmaster

I understand what your saying with regard to the duplicate content that why I brought the issue up as thats my big fear. The problem is if you do a search in google.co.uk, it seems to give preference to .co.uk domains (along as PR and links etc. are equal).

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...property&meta=

The same occurs in google.ie, it gives preference to .ie domains:

http://www.google.ie/search?hl=en&q=...property&meta=

With google going more regional, for example if I type in Google.com it redirects to .ie , is this not an issue thats going to come up more and more, especially if a company is targeting specific regions, i.e. say england and u.s.?

Regards

DRang3d

(I don't want to do it but I'm so tempted!)
