Default Keyword Analysis - Alternatives to Overture?

I've been using Overture's keyword analyzer tool from the get go. Now that I'm ranking, I see that it's pretty inaccurate. Does anyone have proven alternatives to Overture? Thanks a ton!

Have you tried the KW tool at SEO book dot com?

It collates data from word tracker, google, yahoo, KW discovery and has a few other neat features like google trends. Other than that I use word tracker on the paid subscription. THat way you can archive KW and follow stuff a bit more closely.

IMO Graeme's solution is about the best I have found.

Simce I am not doing any appreciable PPC campaigns at the moment, I don't use the paid wordtracker right now, but about 12 months ago, I ran a 12,000 KW ppc campaign for a mortgage broker friend of mine and that was how we did it.

My only PPC role at the moment is helping some of the agents in our office do thier campaigns and they do not have enough KW or big enough budgets to warrant paid anything.

Since I am pretty well ranked with our website for quite a few terms, I use my analytics from our broker site to show them where to go for the good stuff kind of like Morgan shares blogalytics with us.

Seems to work great and get things done. (I know that doesn't help you...sorry).

Something else to keep in mind-- GREAT ppc can be found in wierd places--we have found good results even in kw like University of Louisville Dental School (and of course we crafted our ad to only get those who were looking for houses to click on...)

Sometimes you use the KW to screen the traffic coming into you, but you CAN successfully use non City Real Estate type KW to bring 'em in and customize your message so that only the ones you want come in.

Lower CTR Yep. Still works well and because they are overlooked by most everyone CPC is very low. It's stuff that even a KW gen like WordTracker wouldn't pull up simply because you wouldn't search for it on them.

Best;

Eric

Good points.

If you can record the search queries from any site search functionality it will give you insight to your users terminology. Look over emails at the way prospects ask you questions and really get into the mind set of your different users.

The most important metric is conversion. A lot of people focus on CTR but with out the action all that is money spent. Follow Eric's advise and use your ad copy to weed out the happy clickers

I'm actually not using this for PPC - I've been using Overture's keyword analyzer to determine which KWs to chase for new sites. In this particular case, I was looking at a market & Overture was telling me that hardly anyone was searching for "city real estate" in that market. Also - Overture sent me on a wild goose chase w/ "austin texas real estate" vs. "austin real estate" - I chased the first only to find out the second yields much better results.

However...all the advice is relevant & is very much appreciated.

Graeme - that's awesome! I'm definitely pausing to read all of your posts now (the same way I always have w/ Blackwells)

None of these tools are going to be completely accurate, but they are great for directional purposes and initial analysis.

There is a whole lot of info at your fingertips once you have been gathering data for a while. It's just a matter of knowing where to look.

Another idea is to drive the area and pick up the free news papers that are on sidewalk boxes. I got some great KW ideas that no one else is using and it lets you know if there are any local "slang" terms for the area that users may be searching on.

For example if the city is called Pemberton, locals may know it as Pemby.

Eric Bramlett;

a) Thanks for the kind words. FTR-I read your posts pretty thoroughly as well. Your ability to write well and prolificly is something I truly admire.

b) Disco's tools above are good taken with the advice he gives about accuracy, but will often contradict each other in terms of relative KW traffic. Edit (He's right that they all can be god tools and he's right that they can be inaccurate and sometimes contradict) Just to be clear what I meant.

Ryan ran into the same thing, if memory serves in Atlanta. He targeted one keyword and then switched over to work on a bigger one that Yahoo had reported as pulling less traffic. There was an old thread here on REW if I remember right.

Nice advice Graeme about looking at e-mails in a whole new way. One of the games we play in our office is we role play with emails (and online leads delivered via e-mail) the same way that some people role play with phone calls to sharpen their skills.

If you have a team or a brokerage and can get your folks to do it, it ROCKS. Just grab your last 10 internet leads, print several copies and hand them out to the REALTORS who are participating. Ask them to write a quick e-mail response, making sure to get as much info out of the clients email as possible.

Our lead conversion has improved from doing this with just a small percentage of our 116 folks....and it only takes a couple of times for them to get the hang of it. From that point on, they are analyzing e-mail communication pretty darn well.

Additional note: Graeme-I am enjoying reading your posts as well. Thanks for jumping into the community.
