Default Real Estate and Future Technology

Right, one for the real techies out there. I came across this article (http://news.com.com/Meet+the+metaver...?tag=nefd.lede) on cnet about the "metaverse" , its kind of like future technology trend predictions based on the influences of web 2.0 etc. It focused on companies that are beginning to heavily influence the internet, i.e. google, digg, secondlife, etc. It got me thinking though, especially secondlife, what sort of influence are they going to have over the real estate indusrty? I was wondering has any members already started to get involved in secondlife etc?

I've never heard of secondlife so took a look. These people have to get a first life!

Haha!

I have friends in SL and it's pretty interesting. I have connections with them, they know the real estate mogul in there, that actually makes a GOOD living playing this game buy, developing, and selling real estate.

Interesting concept - it was recently published in the NAR Realtor magazine about SL.

I know it seems a bit sad but there are major companies that have spent money setting themselves up in secondlife. If it's good enough for the big boys, I'm sure it'll have a knock on effect

Be sure to also read this great post over at another blog I frequent weekly - why they don't feel that marketing works in SL.

SL is the biggest bunch of junk - it's just a trend and will go away. Something else similar may replace it, but I don't think it will make one Iota difference for most of us.

I like to look at technologies that have an effect in the near future. Like:

What things do we need to do to stay ahead of the curve on our sites - like advanced mapping systems?

With people going more and more to smart phones - what technologies deliver a real estate product to the smart phones that are user friendly and how can I get involved in those?

If you look too far into the future you will be disappointed because most of the technologies envisioned for 20 years from now - will not evolve - at least not the way they are envisioned now. On the other hand technologies that no one has dreamed of yet - will dominate.

Some of you need to open your minds and think outside the box...

Okay... that may be an extreme example, but looks like someone gets it:

I agree with Disco. Now I'm not saying Secondlife itself will have a huge influence on the real estate industry but the concepts behind it I believe could. Take for example MSN virtual earth, now if you marry this with something like Google Sketchup you would have a unique application that will have effects on the industry

Maybe so... I am for opening my mind....but I am still more interested in the near future than the way out future. I have enough trouble keeping up with the near future. Wayne
