Hey all! I just found something that made me (as a SEO novice) really excited and I wanted to get your opinions.

I've mentioned before on here that I've recently (about a month ago) begun working on a realtor site that was basically starting from scratch as far as SEO. It had a nice design, but not much in terms of optimization. I've done a bit of work on it (simple stuff: adding some keywords, requesting some links, and a few other things), but not a ton. In fact, my 'to-do' list for the website is huge (mostly from picking up ideas here and sites that were referenced here!).

Every week or so, I've been checking our site with keywords to see if it shows up anywhere. Until today, it was no where to be found, but I didn't really expect it to be showing up this soon anyway.

As I was entering various keywords into the SERP tool I was using, I was getting 'Not Found' as usual. But then I entered 'Free Denver MLS' and there it was....#10 on Google! Now, I don't really know what to make of this. It's probably not the very best keyword, since I'm not sure if 'MLS' is really a term buyers use very often....but I'm just so happy to see some measurable progress.

I'd love to hear from some of the experts here about how significant this really is in the big picture. Thanks!

it mean that you are starting to see long tails. Use seobook to see how many times that is searched

"MLS" is a term buyers in my market use tremendously.

mine also but i bet he/she doesnt rank top ten for denver mls. But they do use mls alot in dallas fort worth texas

You're right about that. But hopefully this is a good start! I also just saw that we're #14-Google for 'Denver Relocation Expert'. Those two terms just happen to be links on our two REW blogs....hmmmmmm

Erin,
In google using the webmaster sitemap tools, did you know it will automatically show you what keywords you rank high for in google search?

I just looked there, but am not seeing anything. Do you think that's because I haven't submitted a sitemap? Or maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.

Have you registered the site on your google webmaster tools account? You do not have to have a sitemap registered to see the stats steve is mentioning, but you do need to add the site to your dashboard in order for stats to be collected.

Yea, go ahead and submit your sitemap - it takes a bit of time to see the results but once your site is indexed by google and you start getting some PR, that page will show up. It's under the "Statistics" tab, then the "Query Stats" link to the left.
