So does that mean Goog will devalue the Yahoo directory, so they can get more Adwords revenue?

It's just foolishness.

What I find interesting is last week I was in New York for SES. I left late Friday and up to that time nothing was said about this, at least that I am aware of, and I talked to Google people that afternoon. Matt made the announcement on Saturday. Good timing.

Also, from those that I have talked to the penalizing of AA agents started Saturday. But it could have been before that.

I think we saw something like this coming. Cutts has expressed his distaste for paid links for a while now.

They may not like it but money talks.

In the clicks world: If you throw your money at links eventually you'll build traffic and your site will do well. Alternatively you can throw time and get the same result.

In the bricks world: If you throw money into advertising via TV, billboards, magazine ads etc you will get brand recognition, foot traffic and sales.

For Google to try and differentiate between a paid advertisement for traffic purposes and a paid advertisement for SEO purposes and all other links and promotions is insane. It's like saying you'll only buy Product X if people recommend it and you'll totally ignore all other promotional methods.

After all if you have the $ to throw at links then you've probably also spent up large on design, development and content and have a worthy site.

Anyone who is worried about this is looking for something to worry about. They may devalue links, but the SEO people will go further underground. There will always be a thriving SEO market.

They will never penalize links. They simply cannot.

I think what google is trying to do is increase Adsense revenue by going after all the money people are making by selling links. You see if you take away link sales all the poeple who would have bought those links will be forced to use adsense to get the word out about there site. In turn google makes more money.

I am 100% agreed with that statement. Smart move on Google's part - I hardly think it will make a difference in the long run, though. SEO happens.

The problem with google is they are getting gready. You see people use/used google search because it provided the best results. When they do stupid shit like this they get a short term gain in revenue but a long term loss in SE trafic, which in turn is a long term revenue loss. Google should really quit being so worried about adsense revenue and start worrying about providing the best search results.
