Default removing pages from index

I have created new pages with php extensions and are begging to be indexed.
How should I go about removing the old html pages once the new pages are indexed, right now the html pages are being redirected to the php page but I want to gradullay get rid of the old html pages.

Thanks,
Dan

How are you handling the redirection? Are you using htaccess rewrites? If so, it seems to me you can safely delete the HTML documents, leaving the PHP docs and the rewrites in place.

In the webmaster tools there is a feature that allows you to remove pages from the google index. It's under diagnostics > URL removal.

Your content will then be removed from the index the next time Google crawls your site. If you need to expedite your content removal, make sure you have met one of the requirements listed above, and then select the New Removal Request button below to use this automated tool.
Then there is a tool there to use, but I've never used it.

In the case of a moved page, I think a 301 would be more appropriate than returning a 404 or 410.
