I am new to this forum and I must admit that I am a bit surprised about all the posts I have seen talking about PR (increases/decreases/changes/updates, etc in PR).
How many new clients have your PR given you lately? Or how many top SERPs? IMHO PR has for the last years been a very bad indicator of the quality of a website and it is even worse to take decisions regarding to link exchange with a website solely based on PR. It is relatively easy to artificially inflate the PR of a site but that doesnt mean you will get better rankings. (i.e. buy a couple of PR9 links, spam message boards, through sub domains, etc) I would always go for a link on a content page on a quality PR 1 site that might bring me some clients compared to a standard link on a link page (with 50 other links) on a PR 6 site. Here is a nice article about what PR really is and what you can use it for http://forums.spider-food.net/index.php?showtopic=4125 |

Hey Accom,
Welcome to REW. For the most part, the Webmasters here know that the PR on the tool bar is false. However, there are still a couple of stragglers that have yet to be convinced that it is wrong. They will catch on eventually.

That is exactly my point but there are still some people that buy none relevant high PR links just for the PR they might pass on to their site.
And I am not saying that everybody to worry about PR but on my first day here on this forum I have seen about 5 new posts related to updates in PR. |

Hey Chris,
It's just something that people will always talk about. The best thing to do is to put in your two cents or just wait until they clue in ![]()

Some people that have been in this game longer, still think that PR is the end all.
So when they notice their PR fluctuating, they worry. It's not a bad thing to worry. Some of us fresh spring chickens so to speak, are okay with PR meaning nothing. It's easier to unlearn something if you barely knew it (I'm referring to myself and others, not SEO Nick, though he is in fact my posting robot.)

Only thing to worry about is your rankings. It's fun to see high PR in the foolbar, but really only look when other announce an update. Either way real PR is a very important factor these days in how Google crawls your site and what pages go supplemental.

People rightly obsess about pagerank because the real pagerank has a huge impact on rankings. Unfortunately Google makes sure you have no idea what the real pagerank is, so an important skill to develop is assessing the value of a link from other factors. It's much like a farmer reading the weather. Identifying the value of a link is a skill honed from of experience.
Here's a better overview of pagerank Danny Sullivan recently wrote: http://searchengineland.com/070426-011828.php |

Considering the amount of web traffic generated through google (http://www.seo.ie/2006/01/22/interne...gines/#more-8), as long as you have the other factors(link anchor text, links from quality industry related sites, on page optimization) done right, page rank does have a huge effect. It means the difference between you and your keyword competitors.

Updates of any kind bring on discussion. Discussion is good. Venting is good. Ranting about things you know you shouldn't be worried about relieves stress, invites other misery (misery loves misery). Other times, it's just a simple opinion that brings out the discussion. To see what I mean, check out this thread: http://www.realestatewebmasters.com/...ad.php?t=15450
