What is the best way to find out who owns an LLC or Corporation?

Many states have a ficticious names search that shows who owns what entity.

Thanks. In NC I was able to find the owners name but in SC I was not. How do I find the owners name on that SC website?

What search did you do to find these sites? Just in case I want to find who owns an LLC in a state other than SC and NC.

I just put 'LLC name search' into google. I'd say put the state in there with it, as I got results for many many states when I didn't specify.

Hey Jeff,

Note that many states don't share the "owners" information, but the Registered Agents information. This is not the same thing. :-)

Many corporations use an attorney as a registered agent for privacy.

I did not know that. How do you know which one is shown? Does it actually say registered agent instead of owner?
