Talk about product differentiation, perhaps a new marketing trend for the US industry? You first! ![]() |

There was a very popular agent, I believe located on the East coast although I really can't remember, that had people lining up to give him their listings because of his blunt honesty. His property descriptions were hilarious. Wish I still had the article (I probably do but it's buried somewhere like where my site is in Google).

I do quite a bit of my advertising like that. Less calls but a way higher close rate.

Thought this a funny when I posted, but it really makes one think; Hey, I'd love to do it. However, even my friends that list w/ me would at the very least fire my ass.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I found this thread while searching for a post.

I think the person you are speaking of is Roy Brooks and if you want to read some really funny real estate ads get his book "Brothel in Pimlico" Here is a review from Amazon, "Roy Brooks became a legend in his own time for the puckish delight he took in telling the truth, the whole truth—and even the unwholesome truth—about properties that, as a real estate agent, he advertised for sale. From 1950 until his death in 1971, his fame for these revolutionary, outrageous, funny, and, on occasion, painful advertisements spread far and wide. To readers of London’s SUNDAY TIMES and OBSERVER, his property ads became essential weekend reading." By the way, the title of the book was the title of an actual ad he ran. |

I couldn't remember if it was in England or New England - right direction at least.

Here are some excerpts:
WANTED: Someone with taste, means and a stomach strong enough to buy this erstwhile house of ill-repute in Pimlico. It is untouched by the 20th Century as far as convenience for even the basic human decencies is concerned. Although it reeks of damp or worse, the plaster is coming off the walls and daylight peeps through a hole in the roof, it is still habitable judging by the bed of rags, fag ends and empty bottles in one corner. Plenty of scope for the socially aspiring to express their decorative taste and get their abode in 'The Glossy' and nothing to stop them putting Westminster on their notepaper. 10 rather unpleasant rooms with slimy back yard. £4,650 Freehold. Tarted up these houses make £15,000. by Roy Brooks One house was described as... "exactly like its neighbors and nobody could ever accuse it of being original, interesting or even attractive." Hmmm, Does that sound like anyone else's neighbors? |
