I have just started in the blogging world and have a blog here at REW, wordpress, activerain, and I have a squidoo lens. My question is this. If you are posting to your blogs in 3-4 different blogs are you using different content for each one of them or do/can you duplicate? If you duplicate will it hurt you? What is everyone else doing...

Instead of worrying about duplicate content penalties, look at it this way. Each one of those sites has different readership, are you really writing blogs that are so generic (And thus likely poor quality) that they would make sense on all platforms?
Write your blogs and your content for your audience, and forget about SE's, then you do not have to make these kinds of calls. I write at both Active Rain and REW, and I have posted the same article at both, but only because it was appropriate for both, usually I would not do this as it is just lazy blogging.

It can create a problem depending on the authority of the site. Posting on sites like AR or REW blogs that likely have more authority than your own blog would not benefit your own blog as much. Since the goal should be to develop your own online properties first, use the more tag and direct visitors to the full post which is located only at your own blog. Now you eliminate any potential dupe content issues and you send traffic to your own properties.
Once there, visitors may actually stick around find it worth linking to from their own sites.

So what you are saying is to post the full article on my wordpress blog and then post just an excerpt on say REW and AR with a "read more" back to wordpress? I thought that REW and AR acted as my own blog. Is this not correct? And aren't the audiences at REW and AR about the same?
I hate being so ignorant to this stuff. I guess everyone was at one point though.... Matt

AR and REW Blogs are their own blogs, so not sure if Bob's comments (Which in a general social networking context certainly apply) would apply here: Can't speak for active Rain, but certainly for REW blogs, we do feel that anything posted in your blogs should be able to stand alone. In fact there is a lengthy forum topic in social networking regarding using your REW blog as a mini second website.
Audiences at REW and Active Rain the same? Certainly the membership differs quite dramatically which makes up a portion of the readership, REW members tend on average I would suggest to be more tech savvy than AR. That being said the other side of the readership for the most part comes from search engine traffic, both Blogs rank very well, so it would depend on how you write and target your content for search engine positioning, that would determine the SERP portion of your readership - if you targeted the same phrases with similar content on each, then yes that readership would be similar. Keep in mind however, not all websites are REW or AR, and you should not be relying on them as your main business, they are supplements to (As Bob said) support your main objective which is your own website, which should receive the most love ![]()

Thanks for posting this question... I remember when I thought just doing one blog was enough work only to find out that I should now have 3 different ones going all unique... I hope I have time to acutally sell something to my clients!!

Good point, didn't realize you were talking only of syndication of existing work from your own website to other venues.
