Default Bad linking practice?

It has always been my understanding that running multiple sites on one IP address is an invitation to trouble.

I have been tracking a real estate site in a highly competitive market that currently runs 3 RE sites on one IP. All sites are the same city.

Since August of 2004, the main site has lost over ½ of its back links in Google.

I have seen several sites link to all 3 of these RE sites on the same IP.

Would this be considered a bad link partner or a bad linking practice?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,

~VegasMack

I don't see that as a problem unless there is "cross-linking" involved. Shared IP addresses, versus dedicated, is not uncommon.

I would expect that it would only matter if the sites were hosted on the same IP and registered by the same person. But having a shared IP would not. Although, I maintain seperate hosts, IP's and all my 10-12 domains except 1 is by by proxy. Personally I feel that my online marketing is important and do not want a shared IP with who knows who nor do I want the engines to discount any effort I put into marketing to hit me because I own multiple sites.

They are on the same IP address and are registered by the same person for the same RE Agent.

Not just the same C-Block – all three sites ues the same IP Address.

Is this a bad practice?

And are 3 links from the same IP Address as valuable as 3 from different IP Addresses?

Thanks,

~VegasMack

That was my understanding as well, but if I am wrong, I would really like to know. One site is # 5 on G and is pretty competitive, so I have not seen a problem.

I have been tracking the main site for some time now. While it is still doing very well in Google, the main site has lost substantial ground in Yahoo! and MSN.

The multiple RE sites on a single IP Address is the only thing I can see that would justify the loss of rankings. The downward trend only started after the appearance of the additional 2 sites.

I am wondering if filers are in place for such occurrences.

Thanks,

~VegasMack

I can confirm that linking between sites with the same IP can cause problems.

depends... on the SE

I would think that if your only linking to your own sites their would be a problem. If your also getting links from other people say your ratio is 1:10 or something I don't thing G will care or noticed.

There are hosting companies out their that jam 100's of sites on a single ip

Back in the day you could link all your sites together and get great results .. not to mention it was pretty damn funny.

Those days are gone .. just be good to the se's and they will be good to you.

Simplified: If a real estate company has 3 sites, all for the same agent and all on the same identical IP address, should you link to all 3 sites?

Thanks,
