Default Crickets taking over Austin landmark

The University of Texas tower (a major Austin area landmark) will be darkened at night over the next few days in order to combat the extreme cricket infestation:

I remember when I used to work at a grocery store in Waxahachie (near Dallas), and one year the crickets outside the store were exactly like that - smelly, dead piles. You had no choice but to walk through them to get in and out of the store. As a sacker, you are kind of the low man on the ladder, so it was our job to sweep the piles away from the entrances. UGH!

I dont know too much about the crickets. But the mosquitos have been bad this summer in Austin. Where are all the bats?

What IS up with the mosquitos anyway? My wife and I and our kids have all been bitten lately. I was just thinking that we don't live near water, then I realized that with the recent rains, we ALL live near water. I haven't had to use my sprinkler system at all this year, which is amazing to me considering it's now August.

All the bugs are bad this year! Jason, I've learned it is good to run the sprinklers every so often so the heads don't seize up.

Good idea. Maybe I will run this this week for awhile, just to make sure everything is working properly.
