I have had my website for 6 months and have a few thousand backlinks. I am at the bottom of the first page for "Holland Michigan Real Estate" Johnfaber.com has about 50 links with a pr of 1 but is 2nd for that term. His website is over 6 years old, but when it started it was used for his art company. How important is domain age, and what do I need to do to pass people with domain ages longer than mine?

It is not really about domain age, as much as it is mature links (Link Age) - that domain has been around a lot longer, so the links he has are more trusted as they have matured. What you need is time, and you have a few thousand links? What the hell dude! Seems a little overboard to me, where are all these links coming from, I hope they are all from legit sources as that kind of link growth can get you flagged

I've found domain age is incredibly important. In particular, I am competing against one 10 year old site that has 1/4 of the links of mine (and most of theirs are spam). That site is nailed to the #1 spot in Google for tons of keywords. I would love to get a fraction of their traffic.

Also you guys need to keep in mind, it is not only the maturity of the links, it is also the quality (page rank, trust rank etc) that determine your off page link score. One super high quality link, is worth much more than 100 irrelevant spammy links.

My links are business directories, posts on forums, article directories, I dont try to do anything with spam

The quality of the links are very important... My business partner got a starter site (he built) up in the top 3 positions within 3-4 weeks with a search term getting 12,000 searches per month. But we found that weak links can definately bring ya down quick
