Ok I'm new to this. What exactly is this PR ranking?

PR = Page Rank.


And theres really 2 in most person's minds:

The 1st is "real" page rank - that google uses to help determine your placement when keywords are searched. Only google knows what this is.


The 2nd is common page rank, and the one that most persons refer to when speaking about it. It can be seen in web browsers like Mozilla Firefox, or checked manually using different sites.
The page rank shown is normally not accurate and can be a few weeks to a few months behind what it currently may be.

So, I see some posts where people say they have a PR1 or PR5. Does that mean they are on Page 1 if they have a PR1?

And is there a place I check my website to find out what my page rank is for various keywords?

The page rank value is unique for every page on your website. For most websites, your 'home page' or 'index page' typically has the highest page rank, with interior pages decreasing in PR value.

Google Page rank cannot be used to determine a page's search result position for any given query.

Page rank can be determined by using the Google toolbar when viewing the page in question, or using a number of plugins for various web browsers. However, as Malok mentioned, the PR value displayed can be weeks or months out of date. Google updates toolbar PR display values only every several months. The 'real' PR used by Google to rank pages is fluid, secret, and constantly changes.

Here is a way to check where you rank in the SERPs for certain keywords in an easy to read one line 100 result format. (First visit your website so your link will be purple and not blue) then go http://www.google.com/ie?q=Keywords&...r=&btnG=Search and replace "keywords" with the words you want to rank for. You will see the 1st 100 results and the purple links are your website or competitors pages you have recently visited. Click next to see results 200-300, You can quickly check the first 500-600 results. I think this method doesn't bother Google like the automatic rank checkers do.

Personally, to save you some time:
Don't worry about PR.


It would be like you spending time/effort learning Sanskrit. Its dead. So don't spend time/energy on it.

Besides, PR can be artificially manipulated/faked - and then you have to check it using other tools - so be cautious if you are considering purchasing another existing domain.
