I have a friend with a site hosted by the above and he wants to move is url. They only offer a 302 redirect. I know I have seen discussions on 302s before, but I can't remember where. I'm trying to help this guy take the right action. Any advice?

Or maybe "Justthoughtyouownedit"dotcom or maybe "S-O-L".com ..hehe
On a serious note, is he just moving the domain or doing a site redesign as well? Eric

both - and he made the mistake of making his decision after renewing through these guys for 2 years. My guess is that he is SOL with a good redirect and he may not even actually own the domain.

Sam,
I looked at the site, and it looks like they're a for real registrar and they do web hosting, etc. If he's locked into the domain registration for 2 years, he should still be able to use their "DNS Services" to change the DNS servers to wherever he wants them to go. He should also be able to transfer the domain to another registrar if he wants to. I'm thinking it's their forwarding service that creates the 302, and that is a temporary redirect that will convince the search engines that there are two websites with exactly the same information on them. The name he's forwarding and the name it's forwarded to. Not a good thing. I know GoDaddy does the same thing. Their forwarding creates a 302, but changing the DNS Servers gets around that. Have you checked the Whois record for his domain name? That should tell you who owns it. Good luck with it! Kathleen

You must first receive permission from the listed WHOIS owner to "unblock" the domain name from the existing Registrar (not the ISP vendors).
Once that's accomplished, you can re-register the domain with any bona fide Registrar of your choice on the server you choose. If you must, NEVER use a .302 (temp) redirect. Always use a .301 (permanent) redirect.

Seems like ItsYourDomain dot com is who AA uses and when I switched from them I had a hellava time making the change. They had very poor customer service.
