Best Ways to identify Effective SEO firms

Any ideas on how to identify who the best SEO firms are?

Ask for the urls of some of their clients and then do searches of those sites' keywords to see where they rank. REW seems to do a pretty good job.

Do a search in major cities and see who's on top, the majority of the time you'll see REW sites.

good advice! may i add; you should also analyse the competitiveness of those keywords, some kywords are easier to rank for than others.

If their promise of SEO services sounds too good to be true.....IT IS!
Ex: "Get 50 top 2 placements in less than a month! Guaranteed fast results!" Not a good idea to get involved with that! Also, no good SEO will tell you to install a browser toolbar.
