is there a way that one can check to see if google is showing duplicate content on your sites?

That's a good question. I know Copyscape is good for checking duplicate content in general...

Not sure if there is a way to check for actual penalties, but you can copy a sentence from one of the pages and search google with quotes around the sentence. If other pages come up with the exact same sentence then you know google has those similar pages in their index, and I would want to change them right away.

Jim's got the right idea. Find a unique something in your copy like, 'pawprint for a signature', wrap it in quotes, and search for it.

if you're the original author there's no reason why you should be changing your content. you should check if they're violating your copyright then consider what steps to take.

Just caught that last about changing content...I missed that the first time. No, don't change your content. Send them an email (or emails) and make them change theirs. They are the content thief - not you.
